A holiday park in Eryri has been given the go-ahead for a new hot tub and sauna "wellness" facility, after environmental concerns were addressed. As reported by north.wales, the proposal at Aberdunant Hall hotel and holiday park at Prenteg, between Porthmadog and Beddgelert, was approved with conditions by Eryri National Park planners on 12 October.

The wellness building

The application was made through agents Russell-Hughes Cyf. The building is described as a large, covered area for a hot tub with an open frontage, a sauna and an adjacent changing room. It would be a single-storey unit with a flat roof and a stained timber exterior designed to "blend with the natural surroundings" of the wooded park.

The facility sits within the grounds of the park, among an existing cluster of holiday lodges, "reducing any landscape intrusion". Low-level external lighting has been designed to comply with the National Park's Dark Skies Reserve principles. Users would mainly be visitors staying on the park, walking or cycling to the building along private access roads.

The applicants said the facility would "enhance the quality of visitor facilities" and would "support the local tourism economy in a sustainable manner".

River and SSSI concerns addressed

The site lies next to a small tributary of the Afon Glaslyn, which flows into the Meirionnydd Oakwoods and Bat Sites Special Area of Conservation and the Glaslyn Site of Special Scientific Interest about 720m downstream. Natural Resources Wales initially raised concerns, but said these could be overcome if a Pollution Prevention Plan prepared by the agent was included in the approved documents.

Natural Resources Wales said: "The commitment to ensuring no direct discharge to the nearby watercourse, alongside the neutralisation of chlorinated water prior to disposal and the use of controlled treatment and soak-away system, should adequately minimise the risk of pollution."

Gwynedd Council's public protection office also said it was satisfied with the additional information. In a separate application, the park was granted approval with conditions for a new sign.

Why it matters

The decision shows how on-site facilities can be approved in a protected landscape when environmental safeguards are built into the plans. Owners with holiday homes in the area can find local information on our Porthmadog page.
