Here is a lovely bit of news from the Fife coast. Staff at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park in Kinghorn have raised £4,876.20 for Macmillan Cancer Support, after a year of community events and one very tough walk in the hills.

Three ways to almost £5,000

According to Deadline News, the total came from three fundraising efforts across the year:

  • A summer beetle drive on Saturday 1 August, which raised £2,200 on its own. The Scottish Parliament even took note, with Kirkcaldy MSP David Torrance lodging a motion commending the park for the event.
  • The park's annual Macmillan Coffee Morning on Saturday 26 September, held in its Waterfront Bar with tea, coffee and home baking, and open to the wider community, not just residents on the park.
  • A Macmillan Mighty Hike in the Trossachs on 29 August, taken on by four staff members and one former member of staff.

The hikers

General Manager Janet Murray paid tribute to the walkers, saying: "We have to pay tribute to four of our staff members, and one ex-member, who took part in an extremely tough and challenging Macmillan Mighty Hike in the Trossachs back in August."

The team was Wendy Stevens, Eve Dunsmore and Gill McGibbon from the office, Debbie Williamson from the restaurant, and Eve's sister Maya Bonellie, who used to work in the park's shop during the summer while at university. The hikers ran their own JustGiving page, and the park added everything together. As Janet put it: "We have added all the money together as we wanted to try and get to nearly £5,000."

A park with a habit of giving

Macmillan is not the only cause close to the park. Janet said: "Close to our hearts is the RNLI, which is right on our doorstep, and we also contribute regularly to Guide Dogs for the Blind, naming three different guide dogs."

Fiona McComb, Relationship Fundraising Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park for their continued support and this latest donation of £4,876.20."

The fundraising is not stopping there. The next event is the park's Christmas Market on Sunday 29 November, from 11am to 3pm, which will feature a tombola with proceeds going to charity. Janet has invited anyone who would like to donate a tombola prize to get in touch with her.

It is not the only feel-good fundraising story from a Fife park this autumn, either. We recently covered how Cairnsmill Caravan Park in St Andrews raised nearly £7,000 for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

Part of a park community

Stories like this show the community side of holiday park life, where a beetle drive or a coffee morning brings owners, staff and neighbours together for a good cause. If you own a static caravan, you are part of a park community too, whether you visit every weekend or a few times a season.
