With Halloween falling this Saturday, here is a seasonal story to enjoy. Families at Rosneath Castle Park on the shores of the Gareloch rounded off the season with an afternoon of pumpkin carving followed by fireworks over the loch, as reported by the Helensburgh Advertiser.

An afternoon of pumpkin carving

The activities took place on Saturday 17 October 2026. According to the Helensburgh Advertiser, youngsters were welcomed to pick and carve their own pumpkins, and families were invited to create the spookiest, silliest and most creative pumpkin masterpiece they could.

Once the carving was done, the pumpkins were entered into a competition, with the winner receiving a special prize. The paper reports that organisers also put on a range of Halloween-themed activities for the youngsters, along with the chance to grab a cosy hot chocolate to warm up after all that creative work.

Fireworks on the beach

The afternoon of carving was followed by the park's annual end-of-season firework display. The display was free, with the fireworks set off on the beach at the park's "funzone". Beforehand, spectators could enjoy burgers and buy flashing toys, the Helensburgh Advertiser reports.

A thank you to everyone who chipped in

A spokesperson for Rosneath Castle Park said: "From pumpkins on the tables to fireworks over the Gareloch we have had a lovely weekend at Rosneath Castle Park."

They went on: "Families spent the afternoon choosing pumpkins, getting stuck into carving and showing off their creations, before everyone came together for an evening of fireworks by the loch. It's always a brilliant way to round off the season, bringing the community together for an evening by the loch before the fireworks light up the sky."

The spokesperson also thanked "everyone who kindly donated towards the display, and the team who helped bring it all together."

Why we like this story

It is a simple, cheerful one. A pumpkin, a carving knife and a bit of imagination, then everyone gathering by the water to watch the sky light up. The park's own words sum it up well: a way to round off the season and bring the community together. With hot chocolate after the carving and burgers before the display, it sounds like a warm way to see the season out on the shores of the Gareloch.
